AI Governance Isn't Just a Legal Problem Anymore

Two years ago, AI governance was largely a legal and compliance exercise. Teams wrote acceptable-use policies, documented model risk assessments, and filed disclosures where required. The actual engineering systems were mostly untouched. Today, that separation is gone. Conversely, governance implementations that require deep pipeline expertise to audit — custom logging schemas, hand-rolled filtering code, ad hoc exception handling — create systems that are technically correct but operationally fragile. The compliance team can't verify them. The legal team can't cite them in a disclosure. When something goes wrong, the investigation takes weeks instead of hours.

Building for the Audit You'll Eventually Face

Every enterprise AI deployment will eventually face an audit — regulatory, contractual, or internal. The organizations that handle it well aren't the ones with the most sophisticated AI. They're the ones that built governance into the system from the beginning and can demonstrate, concretely, that the controls work.
